Food waste and hunger are two of America's most pressing issues. We're on a mission to solve them both by connecting surplus food to unmet demand using smart logistics and technology. Bite X Bite.
Sur+ focuses on recovering perishable surplus food, the most likely to be wasted and most urgently needed. Perishables make up 85% of all surplus food waste, yet they're often the hardest to rescue. That's where we step in.
We prioritize:
Fresh fruits and vegetables, often unsold due to appearance or oversupply.
Ready-to-eat meals from restaurants, caterers, or institutional kitchens.
Milk, cheese, yogurt, and eggs that are fresh but nearing expiration.
Uncooked, high-protein items requiring fast recovery and safe handling.
Surplus food exists at every point in the supply chain. We partner with businesses across the board, targeting the highest-impact opportunities to intercept food before it’s wasted.
Restaurants, caterers, and institutions that prepare and serve food.
Grocery stores, markets, and other outlets that sell food directly to consumers.
Facilities that process, package, or produce food products.
Agricultural operations where crops are grown or animals are raised for food.
Food waste is a logistical problem. Food recovery is a logistical solution. At Sur+, we're logistics people. We call it Foodgistics: Smart Surplus Solutions.
We use the four tactics of Make it Known, Make it Inspiring, Make it Simple, and Make it Accessible. These tactics power our foodgistics model.
We raise awareness to close the food waste and food donation knowledge gap.
We incentivize and boost motivation to donate surplus food.
We provide a streamlined program to match surplus food to unmet demand.
We get food to those in need via partnerships and hyper-local distribution.
If you're like most food businesses, you have surplus food. The question is, what do you do with it?
Sur+ makes the donation process easy. Our Pay What You Want (PWYW) service allows a contribution at a level that fits your values, budget, and impact goals.
And here's the return:
Every $1 contributed through Sur+ returns up to $12–$14 in value for your business -- through enhanced tax deductions, reduced disposal costs, and streamlined operations.
All businesses can be part of the solution, regardless of size. Together, we’re turning surplus into shared impact.
PWYW makes it easy to participate by removing financial barriers.
PWYW builds trust and partnerships. It values each food donor’s unique contribution instead of using strict pricing.
PWYW supports businesses of all sizes. It ensures that surplus food from various sources is recovered and redistributed.
Our Pay What You Can (PWYC) model shows our commitment to providing food access with dignity. Research reveals that humans express their basic needs through purchases or the exchange of value.
"The vast majority of those we serve would rather buy their own food."
- Capital Area Food Bank
PWYC helps reduce the stigma linked to food assistance. It lets people give what they can.
PWYC removes financial obstacles. It ensures everyone can access fresh, healthy food, no matter their income.
PWYC creates a shared mission. It encourages people to support the program's success. This helps those who need it the most.
The Capital Area Food Bank says 37% of people in the DC metro area face hunger but do not seek help. Thus, food assistance nonprofits can only help 63% of those in need. To fill this gap, we developed our Pay What You Can (PWYC) and Direct-to-Community (DTC) models. They aim to connect with the remaining 37% in a way that is both convenient and respectful.
Many food rescue groups rely on nonprofits, such as food banks, to share extra food. We too are creating a strong network of trusted redistribution partners. Radical change requires a collective effort. But we don’t stop there; Sur+ extends our efforts through direct engagement with communities. Working in combination, we maximize both our reach and impact.
Our mobile pop-up markets provide surplus food to those in need. This way, we create a convenient and respectful shopping experience.
We understand that real, lasting change requires trust and collaboration within communities. Our local partnerships are key to our mission. They help make our efforts effective and grounded in the neighborhoods we serve.
