what we do.

bite x bite

Food waste and hunger are two of America's most pressing issues. We're on a mission to solve them both. Bite X Bite.

our tactics

foodgistics: Smart surplus solutions.

Food waste is a logistical problem. Food recovery is a logistical solution. At Sur+, we're logistics people. We call it Foodgistics: Smart Surplus Solutions.

We use the four tactics of Make it Known, Make it Inspiring, Make it Simple, and Make it Accessible. These tactics power our foodgistics model.

Make It
Known

We raise awareness to close the food waste and food donation knowledge gap.

Make It
Inspiring

We incentivize and boost motivation to donate surplus food.

  • Recognition program and integrated co-branding
  • Behavioral nudges, social proof, and success stories
  • Cost-effective, reliable food recovery that makes food donation easy
  • Advocate for stronger incentives at the local and federal levels

Make It
Simple

We provide a streamlined program to match surplus food to unmet demand.

  • Robust technology platform streamlines the entire process lifecycle
  • End-to-end food recovery service
  • Guidelines for food donation best practices
  • Dynamic redistribution network utilizing smart logistics and technology

Make It
Accessible

We get food to those in need via partnerships and hyper-local distribution.

  • Partnerships with food assistance nonprofits and local community organizations
  • Direct-to-community program utilizing mobile pop-up markets to reach underserved areas
  • Pay What You Can model to minimize stigma and shame barriers
  • Culturally familiar service model that reflects the diversity of our communities

Empower choice and generosity

pay what you want.

If you're like most food businesses, you have surplus food. The question is, what do you do with it? Sur+ makes the donation process easy.

Our Pay What You Want (PWYW) service model for surplus food donors empowers businesses to contribute at a level that aligns with their capacity and goals. All can join the fight against food waste and hunger. Together we can create a collaborative and sustainable solution for surplus food.

flexibility

PWYW makes it easy to participate by removing financial barriers.

collaboration

PWYW builds trust and partnerships by valuing each food donor's unique contribution rather than enforcing rigid pricing.

inclusivity

PWYW accommodates businesses of all sizes, ensuring that surplus food from all sources can be recovered and redistributed.

Ensure dignity and access

pay what you Can.

Our Pay What You Can (PWYC) service model for food recipients embodies our commitment to providing food access with dignity. Research studies show that humans express their most basic needs through purchases or exchange of value.

"The vast majority of those we serve would rather buy their own food."
- Capital Area Food Bank

dignity

PWYC reduces the stigma often associated with food assistance by empowering individuals to contribute within their means, fostering dignity and inclusion.

Accessibility

PWYC eliminates financial barriers, ensuring fresh, nutritious food is available to all regardless of income.

Ownership

PWYC fosters a sense of shared mission, inspiring individuals to invest in the program's success for the benefit of those who need it most.

reaching the other 37%

The Capital Area Food Bank reports that 37% of our neighbors in the DC metro area face hunger but do not seek food assistance. As a result, food assistance nonprofits, including food banks and pantries, are able to serve only 63% of those in need. To address this gap, we’ve designed our Pay What You Can (PWYC) and Direct-to-Community (DTC) models to reach the remaining 37% in a convenient and dignified manner.

a step further

direct-to-community.

Most food rescue organizations rely on nonprofits, like food banks, for surplus food redistribution. At Sur+, we are also building an extensive network of trusted and exceptional redistribution partners. We believe radical change requires a collective effort. But we don’t stop there -- we go further by directly engaging with communities. With the 63% / 37% ratio in mind, our Direct-to-Community (DTC) model complements our partnerships, enabling Sur+ to maximize both our reach and impact.

Mobile pop-up markets

Our mobile pop-up markets bring recovered surplus food directly to individuals in need, offering a convenient and dignified shopping experience.

  • PWYC in action -- ensures access to healthy food while preserving dignity, allowing individuals to pay what they can afford, or nothing at all
  • Target underserved communities, such as food deserts, where access to grocery stores is limited and public transportation options are scarce. This ensures that those who need help the most can easily access our services.
  • Effectively serve populations often overlooked by larger food assistance programs, bringing food to where it’s most needed
  • By engaging with individuals facing hunger, we gain valuable insights into their unique challenges and needs, allowing us to refine and enhance our services based on their feedback
  • Foster community empowerment and solidarity, allowing neighbors to connect and share resources in a supportive environment

Hyper-local partnerships

We understand that real, lasting change requires trust and collaboration within communities. Our hyper-local partnerships are integral to our mission, ensuring that our efforts are both effective and deeply rooted in the neighborhoods we serve.

  • Partnerships with community-based groups, churches, schools, and small businesses that are already known and trusted within specific communities
  • Partnerships allow us to tailor our services to the unique needs of each community, from cultural preferences to dietary restrictions, ensuring that we are delivering what is truly needed
  • Leverage the expertise and resources of our local partners to enhance the reach and effectiveness of our work, amplifying our impact through collaboration
  • By working with partners who are already embedded within their communities, we strengthen the sense of connection and shared responsibility, fostering solidarity in the fight against hunger and food waste
